Thriving in Challenging Times

Everywhere you turn, people are talking about the challenges of making ends meet, finding a good-paying job or even simply keeping up with the latest tech trends.

Personal setbacks, professional difficulties and the threats of a global crisis all hinder one's ability to thrive....if you let it get to you.

In times like these, I focus on the word "RESILIENCE." Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. It can make a profound difference in how we navigate through tough times.

There are some practical strategies for cultivating resilience, which enable individuals and organizations to thrive in the face of adversity.

  1. Positive Mindset: I often write and speak about the power of a positive mindset. See a past blog here (https://www.motivationalmuse.com/post/the-power-of-positive-thinking-how-your-mindset-affects-your-life). Having a positive mindset involves maintaining an optimistic outlook and focusing on solutions instead of problems.

    a. To maintain a positive mindset, I rely on the practice of gratitude. Everyday I think about and even journal on the things that I am grateful for. See a past blog on gratitude here (https://www.motivationalmuse.com/post/gratitude-and-sweet-success).

    b. I also reframe negative thinking by exchanging the issues and problem thoughts in my head to constructive criticism that leads me to a list of possible solutions. For example, instead of saying "I can't fix this or handle this situation" say "I will find a solution to this challenge."

  2. Build Strong Connections: Social aspects are important. Everyone needs someone in their corner. Cultivate different professional and personal groups in which you can build positive relationships. You bounce ideas off your professional circle or friends; perhaps they have dealt with a similar challenge. Your friend groups provide a safe space for you to relax, have a few laughs and simply be yourself. I have had people tell me that they find it hard to make friends. To that I say, you have to become comfortable with being new to the group. Also, to be a friend, you must show yourself to be someone who is friendly. This is a challenge for introverted people, but practicing going to new places and introducing themselves will help them to gain the confidence they need to get out of their comfort zone.

  3. Be Flexible and Adaptable: The ability to adapt to change is a critical component of resilience. In challenging times, things often happen quickly and unexpectedly, so remaining flexible and ready for change will work in your favor. The key to this is to be open for change. Embrace new ways of thinking and approaching things. Be open for innovation and recognize that somethings will be out of your control. Focus on what you can influence and let go of the notion that you must control everything.

  4. Learn from Experiences: There's a saying that past behavior is a good indicator or future actions. Use past experiences as lessons. Consider what you've learned from past mistakes and victories to guide your path going forward.

Cultivating resilience so that you can thrive is an ongoing process that requires intention and practice. Resilience is not about avoiding problems or challenges, its about facing them with courage and tenacity. Each small step will take you and your organization to a more optimistic place on the bounce-back road to resilience.
